NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. Some 300 couples rolled the dice on love, again, as they renewed wedding vows Sunday to open Canada's first casino chapel, including a woman whose biological family missed out the first time she tied the knot.
"I'm overwhelmed,'' said Fran Henderson, the woman's mother, before the ceremony at Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort.
"I'm just glad that we're going to have a chance to do this because we didn't know Angela when she got married, so now all four of us will be able to do this as a family.''
After spending a decade searching for her biological family, casino employee Angela Rines, 31, finally married her husband five years ago. Only months after the ceremony, Rines discovered she was working alongside her birth mother and two sisters at the casino.
"I never imagined they would be so close,'' said Rines in a telephone interview from Niagara Falls.
When the group heard about the mass wedding to open the chapel, mom and her three daughters jumped at the opportunity to renew their vows.
"I went home, talked to my husband and said, `How great would it be for us to do this?' '' said Rines's sister, Mimi McRae, 34. "Made a phone call and they were like, yup, definitely. Nobody hesitated ... it was a great idea.''
Sister Tracy Korneluk, 35, said there were butterflies, but renewing her vows alongside her family was exciting.
"I haven't seen Ang get married so to have all of us together is absolutely crazy,'' said Korneluk.
Drawing on his 30 years in the casino game, including 20 in Las Vegas, casino president Larry Lewin decided to gamble on turning the honeymoon capital of Canada into the wedding capital.
However, Lewin said, Elvis impersonators need not apply and don't look for any drive-thru weddings. He said the ceremonies will opt for "simple elegance'' similar to what dazzling Vegas hotels like the Bellagio or MGM Grand have done.
"Chapel rooms that are very elegant for people that just want to have a beautiful event, but still have a wow feel,'' is how Lewin described the chapel which is already booked for two Valentine's Day ceremonies.
Lewin expects as many as 1,200 ceremonies will be performed at the casino chapel in its first year. He said the service will likely complement Fallsview's business, already pegged at around nine million visitors each year.
"We're going to get some people that may come for strictly the chapel once they see it,'' said Lewin. "But with the 12 million visitors that already come here each year (to Niagara's two casinos) I think this is just an additional option or amenity that we have to offer.''
The chapel is made of two rooms, one that seats about 25 people and the other that hold 50 people. However the rooms can be combined for larger functions and the Grand Hall can hold as many as 2,000.
Plans are underway to build three gazebos in front of The Falls for outdoor weddings. Lewin says it should be ready by July.
"So people will actually be able to get married outside, overlooking The Falls if they choose.''
Lewin said he had already given tours to eight couples over the weekend.
"Each one said, `I didn't expect this. This is gorgeous. This is nice.' So I think we're going to accomplish what we wanted to,'' said Lewin.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
