Canadians donated to tsunami relief in record numbers on the final day of an offer for federal matching funds and credit on their 2004 tax returns.
Since Dec. 26, Canadians have donated just over $150 million to the cause -- and almost $30 million of that appears to have poured in during the final 24 hours. The deadline for matching funds and tax credit was Jan. 11.
Money sent by private Canadians to about 20 non-governmental organization will be matched by the federal government.
For the main beneficiary, that means the Canadian Red Cross's donations of $104 million could rise to more than $200 million. The private donations blew away a previous fundraising record of $25 million, raised in the days after 9/11.
The Red Cross now says it has enough funds to sustain an aid package for the tsunami-sticken area for the next 10 years.
Here are donations from private citizens, to the top organizations (some of these include corporate donations, but none include the government matching funds):
- The Red Cross, $99 million
- World Vision, $20 million
- Unicef Canada, $11.7 million
- Oxfam Canada and Quebec, $6.6 million
- Doctors without Borders, $5 million
- Care Canada, $4.5 million
- Save the Children, $2.3 million
- Free the Children, $1.4 million
These numbers are up until midnight last night, but many of them say it could be slightly higher because they are still counting, and waiting for some mail-ins.
In addition, Ottawa agreed to match individual donations to Development and Peace, Mennonite Central Committee Canada, Canadian Lutheran World Relief, Canadian Food for the Hungry International, World University Service of Canada and FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance Canada.
The Canadian government increased its contribution for tsunami aid $425 million on Monday.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
