Canadian Idol's crooning quartet became a trio on Thursday night as Newfoundland's Jason Greeley became the unlucky seventh competitor to be ousted from the Top 10.
After a night filled with elegant atmosphere and big band sound, Greeley was edged out of the competition after receiving the least amount of votes out of 3.2 million cast during the show's tightest ever voting results.
His rendition of the standards, "I Won't Dance" and "It Had to be You," impressed the judges on Wednesday night, prompting Jake Gold to label the 27-year-old as a "big band singer."
But the Wild Card competitor, who was called "the comeback kid" by Ben Mulroney, could no longer hang on after the three other competitors -- Abbotsford's Jacob Hoggard, Medicine Hat's Kalan Porter and Saskatoon's Theresa Sokyrka -- all delivered solid performances.
The 23-year-old Sokyrka joined Greeley in the bottom half but survived the cut to move on to next week's competition during which the three remaining hopefuls will sing songs chosen by the judging panel.
In his parting words, Greeley expressed gratitude for the support of his fans.
"I hope to see you really soon. I hope to repay you in how you've repaid me," the singer also said.
Greeley closed the night with Lionel Richie's "Easy", a song he says he's been singing for the last 10 years.
Competition resumes for the remaining hopefuls on Wednesday as they take on the challenge of performing songs handpicked by the Idol judges.
