Bloc Quebecois MP Yves Rocheleau triggered the wrath of the prime minister Thursday when he told the House of Commons Thursday that he's a Quebecer first and a last, and not a Canadian.
Prime Minister Jean Chretien suggested the MP was Canadian enough to collect his federal paycheque.
"I think the member for Trois Rivieres should withdraw from this chamber because he's affirmed he's not a citizen of Canada, but he's Canadian (enough) to receive his pay," Chretien said to roars of laughter and outrage.
Rocheleau made the comments during the daily Question Period during a Bloc motion that would recognize Quebec as a nation.
The motion passed Thursday by a vote of 102-0 -- one day after a similar motion was defeated in the House by a vote of 168-38.
While Thursday's motion passed, Rocheleau's comments didn't seem to. Immigration Minister Denis Coderre also weighed in on the comments, calling them a "disgrace."
"You know he said, 'I am not Canadian.' What are you doing here? You're good enough to collect a pension. You're good enough to collect a salary. But you're not Canadian."
Coderre was given the finger by a Bloc MP Bernard Bigras on Wednesday, during a heated debate on Quebec's nationhood. He immediately demanded an apology.
The question of Quebec nationhood comes up occasionally in the province and legislature.

I don't blame Roy for wanting to win and as he gets older, it's more important for him to be on a winning team. It sure will be sad to see him go. With this ownership, it's more of a financial issue -- they just don't have and probably never will have the resources to put a winner on the field. Maybe they should look at selling the team to someone who can build a winner. And they wonder why the fan base is drying up.
