As shown on CTV Tuesday night, a second kick at the proverbial Idol can made the difference for a pair of competitors on Canadian Idol's Wildcard Show.
Toya Alexis, from Ajax, Ontario, and Ryan Malcolm, from Kingston, Ontario, were voted into the finals by the Canadian public.
While the initial plan was for only one to advance from the wildcard round, the voting results were so extraordinarily close between Toya and Ryan that the producers decided to give the public what they want, and added another wildcard spot.
There's no rest for the wildcard winners, however. They'll join the previously announced nine finalists -- Karen-Lee Batten, Gary Beals, Mikey Bustos, Candida Clauseri, Audrey de Montigny, Jenny Gear, Tyler Hamilton, Billy Klippert and Richie Wilcox -- in rehearsals for next week's first show of the finals.
After being snubbed by voters last week, despite being a favourite of the judges, Toya was redeemed this time around, earning the most votes with her version of Whitney Houston's "Try It On My Own."
Ryan made some changes in his outfit and song choice this week, going with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are." His efforts were well received by the judges on Monday night.
Though they were out of touch with voters last week, judges Jake Gold, Sass Jordan, Farley Flex and Zack Werner had more success in their prognostications when it came to the wildcard results. Farley and Zack both picked Toya as the clear-cut number one, while Toya was also mentioned as a possibility by Jake and Sass.
Now that Canadian Idol has selected its 11 finalists, the competitors will move into a Toronto mansion and perform live on Monday nights, with voting results continuing to be shown live on Tuesday nights, as the show moves towards finding the first Canadian Idol.
Next week, the 11 finalists will perform on Monday night at a special time, 7:30 p.m. ET.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
