Winnipeg Police fear a biker gang turf war could surface in their city. An internal police memo obtained by CTV News reveals at least one gang in the city may be fighting for control of the drug trade.
In the memo, police admit the gang -- the Zig Zag Boys -- is a support group to the Hell's Angels who is looking for the outright takeover of the drug network.
An author who is considered to be an expert on the Hell's Angels warns that if they move into Winnipeg, there will be more drugs on the streets, and more addicts.
They will increase the level of crime in the community,
said Yves Lavigne. These addicts will go out, rob corner stores, shoot people, break into cars, mug people, steal their purses, break into homes. So the quality of life in Winnipeg will go downhill.
Lavigne's warning comes as the budget for the Winnipeg Police anti-drug gang unit is cut in half.
All we know is when we have cuts like that and we have an increase in violence, and much of it is gang related, I would assume it's cutting in to our effectiveness to deal with gangs,
said Winnipeg City Councillor Harvey Smith.
Police in Winnipeg have been under the gun to quell violence in the city. But they say violence and the drug situation are just two of many problems they face.

I applaud the budget, even though Health Care and education may stay unscathed. Sadly this cannot last and I worry to later this year where cuts will become enviable. If anything, this provides the Wildrose Alliance plenty of ammo when an election is called.
