Aaron Walpole falls short of Idol finals
|
He blew the roof off of Canadian Idol on Tuesday night, but in just 24 hours it all came crashing down on Aaron Walpole after he was eliminated from the competition. The 26-year-old's run at the Idol crown ended Wednesday after results showed the St. Thomas, Ont. resident received the lowest number of votes out of the 3.5 million phoned in by viewers. His exit also proved bittersweet for it came just after paying tribute to his favourite band, Barenaked Ladies. Known for his explosive vocals, Walpole delivered a stirring rendition of BNL's "Break My Heart" on Tuesday's show, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd and rave reviews from the judges. But despite being hailed as "the best singer left in the competition" by Farley Flex, Walpole appeared to miss the mark with his second and playful song, "Enid." Zack Werner, who was among the judges not pleased with Walpole's sophomore performance, had only kind words to say about the hopeful before results were revealed. "You gave two of the best performances that anybody ever gave on this show. I never bought into the rocker working-class guy but dude, you can sing. And the work you did – unbelievable," Werner said. After a commercial break, Ben Mulroney revealed Walpole as the next competitor to be eliminated. The news, however, was met with loud booing from the crowd. Walpole's voice began to quiver as he thanked his supporters from St. Thomas. But keeping his composure he continued to say, "I know this is just the beginning. So keep an eye out there for my CDs." Perhaps, he'll be able to draw inspiration from last season's third-place finisher, Jacob Hoggard, who returned to the Idol stage to perform his new single, "On My Own," with band Hedley. With Walpole out of the running, the summer's much-anticipated showdown is set as Burlington, N.L.'s Rex Goudie and Calgary, Alta.'s Melissa O'Neil go head-to-head in next week's finale. Canadian Idol airs Tuesday 8 p.m. ET on CTV. |
