Rawn bows to the King and out of Canadian Idol

She may be Canadian Idol's queen of rock but on Wednesday night, Suzi Rawn made her final curtsy to the crowd after losing her battle against the King of rock 'n' roll, Elvis Presley. The Kamloops, B.C. resident became the seventh hopeful to be eliminated from the competition after grabbing the least amount of votes out of the 3.6 million tallied after Tuesday's tribute show to Elvis. Her rendition of "Heartbreak Hotel" had received positive reviews from the judges, except for Zack Werner who bluntly told the singer she looked like she was in need of a good night's sleep. Rawn's second song, "Can't Help Falling in Love", showcased her softer side. But while the judges appreciated her original, stylized approach to the ballad, they thought her vocals sounded shaky. Wednesday's results show marked Rawn's third consecutive appearance in the bottom three, but it was her fourth trip, overall, to centre stage. The night also coincided with the singer's 23rd birthday. But before the results were revealed, host Ben Mulroney asked each judge to comment on one of the four performers. Jake Gold offered his words of consolation to Rawn. "I want you to know that if you go home tonight you should never think of your birthday as the day you left Canadian Idol," the judge said. "You should think of your birthday as the day you were able to start your career." Rawn, who has been rocking out in local circuits with her band, King Size Suzi, didn't seem to let the news put a damper on her birthday. "I just want to say thank you. I am overwhelmed with gratefulness for this whole experience," she said. "To everyone behind the scenes, to everyone back home, to all the fans, I just can't say thank you enough. It's really been a pleasure to be here. Thank you." Only three competitors remain in the running: St. Thomas, Ont.'s Aaron Walpole, Calgary, Alta.'s Melissa O'Neil and Burlington, N.L.'s Rex Goudie. The trio will salute Canada's own pop icons, The Barenaked Ladies, on Tuesday 8 p.m. ET on CTV. |
