Curtain falls for Idol's Casey LeBlanc

"I'm still a teenager and I still have lots of growing to do and all of this helped me. So thank you," said teary-eyed Casey LeBlanc, who became the sixth hopeful to be eliminated from Canadian Idol. As revealed on Wednesday's show, the 17-year-old from Nackawic, N.B. ended her quest for the Idol crown after grabbing the lowest number of votes out of the 3.4 million cast by viewers. LeBlanc received her fair share of criticism during the Top 10, with the judges often knocking the teen for failing to sell the emotion in her songs. Despite her shaky start, she appeared to hit her stride halfway through the competition and earned the judges' praises for her classic rock performance last week. Her rendition of Burton Cummings' song, "Timeless Love," on Tuesday night also drew positive comments from the panel. At the results show, Ben Mulroney gathered the five competitors on stage and revealed the voters' decision to each hopeful. Rex Goudie and Aaron Walpole were the first two singers to return to safety, soon followed by Melissa O'Neil, which left LeBlanc and Suzi Rawn in jeopardy. But before the results were revealed, Mulroney asked the remaining Idols what they thought of as they faced elimination. "The sick kids. I couldn't even watch it," said LeBlanc, alluding to the children at Toronto's Sick Kids Hospital, whom they met during a recent visit. "This is what this is for. This is what it's all about." Rawn, on the other hand, openly shared regrets about her performance. "I just wish I could've shown Canada more," she said. "I wish I could relax a little bit more and enjoy this, but it's a great experience." Judge Jake Gold weighed in on the evening's outcome and assessed the future of each of the two competitors. "Casey: very young. She's still got a long career ahead of her. If she wants to pursue that as her career then she should," he said. As for Rawn, Gold said, "She'll go back to her band, King Size Suzi, and play all over Canada and sell out venues everywhere she goes." The 22-year-old rocker, however, managed to dodge her third bullet and took her seat among the three surviving Idols. LeBlanc, on the other hand, ended her Idol journey with a youthful, yet seemingly bittersweet, giddiness. "There's so much I want to say. This has been so much fun," she said, holding back tears. "I've learned so much about everyone here, about everyone that I've seen, about being judged, about being with a band, about meeting new friends, about the sick kids, like I said. All those experiences are totally making me." Canadian Idol's Top 4 strut their stuff to the music of Elvis Presley on Tuesday, 8 p.m. on CTV. |
