Daryl Brunt ends run at Idol crown
|
Canadian Idol said goodbye to its youngest finalist, Daryl Brunt, after Wednesday's results show revealed the 16-year-old as the lowest vote getter out of the remaining seven hopefuls. The Sudbury, Ont. high school student had trouble impressing the judges Tuesday night with his rendition of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World", which the panel found "weird" and "cheesy". The teen also received flak for dressing in a cardigan, tie and tennis shoes during "Standards" night. After enduring the harshest criticism of the evening, Brunt left his future in the hands of the voters. The impact of the judges' opinions would be felt the next night as he received the least amount of votes out of the 3.1 million tallied. Nackawic, N.B.'s Casey LeBlanc and St. Thomas, Ont.'s Aaron Walpole also joined Brunt in the bottom three. This marked the first time both competitors faced elimination. But before the results were revealed, judge Zack Werner offered a message to the three competitors. "You don't lose this thing, somebody wins this thing so I think that's largely irrelevant. And the moment of defeat here is not the point." Werner also praised LeBlanc for her ability to hold her head up despite taking some "vicious shots" the last few weeks. Then with Ben Mulroney's announcement, LeBlanc was sent back to the safety of the stools, trying to hold back tears as she joined the rest of the Idols. Walpole, on the other hand, was left to wait through a commercial break before finding out he was still in the competition. But for Brunt the end had finally come. The teen, however, appeared unsure of how to react and asked, "Do I sing now?" The seemingly shy and timid singer also expressed his gratitude. "Thank you everybody. Friends, family, judges, crew, band, everything, thank you." Keeping up a brave face to an appreciative and emotional crowd, Brunt closed out the show with a reprise of "What a Wonderful World." The six survivors rock out next Tuesday as they celebrate the genre of classic rock. Canadian Idol airs at 8 p.m. ET on CTV. |
