Amber Fleury bows out of Idol

She wowed the judges with her heartbreaking ballads and haunting voice but on Wednesday night, Amber Fleury bowed out of the competition after receiving the lowest number of votes on Canadian Idol. The 26-year-old paralegal from Calgary, Alta. failed to receive enough ballots to move ahead in the finals after her performance of Cher's "Just like Jesse James" during Tuesday's '80s theme night. It appeared the country, which pooled together 2.7 million votes, agreed with the judges who criticized Fleury for not stepping out of her shell and showing a more fun side to her personality. Similar to last week's "bottom three", Wednesday's trio consisted of the western provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, with Kamloops-resident Suzi Rawn and Saskatoon's Josh Palmer joining Fleury on stage. The evening marked Palmer's second appearance in the "bottom three" but, like last time, he was quickly called back to the safety of the couch, leaving Rawn and Fleury on the edge of elimination. Judge Jake Gold weighed in on the evening's results but, instead of pointing the finger at western voters, he reminded the Idols to "step up" in the competition and say, "I want to win this thing." Then with Ben Mulroney's announcement, Rawn was spared while Fleury said her goodbye. "I want to extend my extreme gratitude and sincere thanks to everyone all across Canada for voting for me and just knowing that you sat there for two hours every week to vote for me, to keep me in this competition, really touches my heart," she said. "I've met so many wonderful people. To be in the judges company, I just value their opinion so much and I love you all. Thank you so much." The judges, meanwhile, showed their appreciation as they led the crowd in honouring Fleury with a standing ovation. The remaining seven competitors perform next Tuesday, backed by a live Big Band orchestra, as they celebrate "The Standards". Canadian Idol airs at 8 p.m. ET on CTV. |
