Emily Vinette departs Canadian Idol's Top 10

Canadian Idol's Top 10 said farewell to one of its own with the departure of Ottawa's Emily Vinette, whose quest for the Idol crown ended Wednesday night after receiving the lowest number of votes in the singing competition. Vinette's penchant for hitting the "star-search moments" in her songs catapulted her into the Top 10, but on Tuesday night's Canadian Hits themed show, the 17-year-old's high notes proved insufficient to keep her in the running. Her rendition of "Cryin'" received poor reviews from the judges who criticized the teen for lacking control in her lower register. Sudbury, Ont.'s Daryl Brunt and Calgary's Melissa O'Neil also joined Vinette on centre stage as the "bottom three" competitors who racked up the least amount of votes out of the 2.4 million cast by viewers. O'Neil, however, was quickly sent back to the couch where the other Idols who dodged elimination watched Brunt and Vinette sweat out another commercial break. Host Ben Mulroney ultimately broke the news that spelled the end for Vinette and for the teary-eyed Brunt. "Thank you for voting and getting me here. I've enjoyed it so much. It's been a great experience and a chance of a lifetime. Thanks," said Vinette who wrapped up the show with a reprise of "Cryin'". The evening, however, wasn't just about goodbyes. Canadian Idol welcomed to the stage reigning American Idol Carrie Underwood who performed her debut single, "Inside Your Heaven" to an enthusiastic crowd. The newly-minted Idol was also presented with an award for double-platinum sales of her CD single in Canada. Asked whether she was aware of her popularity north of the border, Underwood smiled bashfully and said, "No, I didn't but it's absolutely amazing and I appreciate everything." As for giving advice to her Canadian counterparts, she said, "Just get up there and do what you do. I mean this is what you were born to do so do it." The remaining nine competitors will take to the stage next Tuesday at 8 p.m. to perform hits from legendary artist Stevie Wonder. |
