Amber Fleury speaks volumes in a song
|
There's something about Amber Fleury that seems to get everyone in a kafuffle. Everyone, that is, except herself. From making Jake Gold vibrate to bringing Sass Jordan to tears, the 26-year-old seems to turn into a goosebump-giving goddess each time she steps on to the stage. No one knows this more than Fleury's mother whom, according to the singer, was more nervous than her during the performance show on Canadian Idol. "I talked to her yesterday and she's like, 'Amber, I can't even think. I don't know what to do. I'm sitting on the edge of my kitchen table tonight, right by the phone, with a cup of coffee beside me and I'm going to be pressing redial the whole two hours." Fleury says, "She gets me riled up sometimes, you know, because I'm pretty calm most of the time." Even when the judges heaped on the praises and even when Ben Mulroney finally declared her a Top 10 finalist, Fleury remained cool. But don't mistake her on-camera composure for indifference. The Calgary native is just tremendously talented at keeping her emotions in check, and you can blame it on her paralegal training. Or perhaps, Fleury just prefers to harness all of her emotion and unleash them when the right time and song come along. Case in point: Bonnie Raitt's ballad, "I Can't Make You Love Me." "When I sing a song I think about the most important things in my life. I think, 'Okay, have I ever gone through a situation like this?' If I have, then that's all the more emotion in my song," says the self-confessed music-addict. "That's where I think the passion comes from. It's just me being able to relate to most of the songs." Despite her knack for keeping a calm exterior, Fleury admits she was emotionally in shambles after Mulroney called out her name. "I just kind of shut down for a minute and went weak in the knees again and just kind of thought, 'Okay now I have to get up.' They expect me to get up and I've got to walk and stand with Ben and I have to sing," she recalls. "I'm just happy I didn't break down and cry because that was my initial thought. It's not a very good idea to cry and sing at the same time." Eye on Idol |
