Vinette plans to make the grade on TV and in the classroom

As if appearing on live television wasn't pressure enough, try being the judges' heavy favourite to make the Top 10 and carrying the weight of expectations on your shoulders -- in front of two million people. That's where Emily Vinette found herself on Wednesday night, on the Canadian Idol stage waiting for her name to be called. Fortunately for the 17-year-old, Ben Mulroney took the load off of her back and finally declared her a Top 10 finalist. Whew. "It feels great that so many people voted. It's just so exciting," Vinette tells Eye on Idol, after enduring the roller-coaster results show. Like fellow finalist Casey LeBlanc, the Ottawa native felt the nerves that lingered from the previous night's performances. "Pretty much after Dave [Moffatt] sang, everybody was kind of shocked, because I thought he performed really well. I think everything just went downhill from there, I don't really know why," she says. "When I went up there I just tried to focus and do my best. My first line was kind of shaky but the rest was okay." As the last performer of the group, the responsibility seemed to fall on Vinette to save the evening from becoming a total wreck. Lucky for her, singing "Don't Cry Out Loud" did just the job. "I just wanted to sing a powerful song," says the shy teen. Now that it's all behind her, Vinette can start looking forward to and preparing for the Top 10, especially if she'll need to get used to delivering clutch performances. "I'm going to be singing like crazy," she says. "It's hard sometimes when you have to sing a lot in one day. So you have to train your voice, at least an hour a day singing, and have some vocal lessons." And what song would she love to sing in the Top 10? Vinette says if she had a chance, she'd like to sing "Unchained Melody." However, before the Grade 11 honours student can attend to her Idol career, she'll have to take care of business in biology class. "First thing I'll do when I get home is study because two days later I'll have an exam in biology." But seeing that she aced the tough Idol exams on TV, this over-achiever probably won't be breaking a sweat in the classroom. Eye on Idol |
