Danian Vickers
Age: 23 "When viewers see me perform in the Top 32 they'll hear a unique sound and a unique person – I want to grab their attention when I sing." Danian Vickers started singing at the age of four and began entering talent competitions at the age of nine. She says she was inspired to sing by Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Patti LaBelle. Danian studied at a high school for the performing arts and has sung at various fundraisers, functions and in musicals. The Ryerson University student entered the competition to "show Canada who Danian is!" Danian is a creative individual who likes to dance and take photographs. "I love photography," she says. "It allows me to tap into my creative side." In her spare time she likes to write in her journal, write songs and create music. Although she loves to be at home, she says "I can be an extrovert at times!" Vickers likes pizza, raspberry hot chocolate and would like to develop her acting skills. She says that she could not live without "coffee and chocolate" and her favourite movie is Ray. Danian cheers for the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Blue Jays ("even though they are not doing too well!") If she could meet one person, Danian says it would be Kelly Clarkson. "I would like to ask her about her experience in American Idol," she says. The song title that best describes her? Sade's King of Sorrow, she says.

What has been the biggest accomplishment of your life? Making it this far in the Canadian idol, and being comfortable in my own skin. What are you the most proud of? Being a part of the top 32 , my family. I have grown a lot, performance-wise. Which item could you not live without? My music cds, my voice, coffee and chocolate. What's been the best day of your life? I have many good and bad days, making the top 32 was one of the best days. If you could meet one person, living or dead, who would it be and why? I would like to meet Kelly Clarkson, and ask her about her experience in American Idol and also Celine Dion. What do you think has gotten you this far in the competition? Listening to the advice that the judges give and doing it in my performances. What will it take for you to become the Canadian Idol? A lot of practice and being true to myself, personal growth, and getting over my fears. What has been the most challenging part of the competition so far? Learning new songs in less than three hours and performing them with a lot of nerves and depending on your partners when we were put into groups. Whose career path would you like to follow and why? Celine Dion because of the longevity of her career, and Sade, Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia. What part of the Canadian Idol experience has surprised you the most? That it all happens so fast, and the suspense they put you through before you find out your results. What did you learn about yourself during the Top 100? That I was holding back some of my emotions when I perform that I do well when I am under pressure. What was your reaction when you made the Top 32? I was on cloud 9! It was a goal that I had set for myself and accomplished. Who has been the greatest inspiration of your life? My mom and living a fulfilling life. Who has helped to make you the singer you are today? Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Patti Labelle, my mom and singing colleagues. What song touches you the most? Why does it affect you so much? "If I Could" because I can relate to it, if I had a child I would sing it for him/ her.
What do you do to keep your nerves in check during the competition? I do a breathing exercise, (long breaths) to alleviate the nerves. How has this competition changed you? I am stronger and can take/handle rejection and criticism without blowing up! Which words or phrases do you most overuse? I say "definitely" a lot, and also "I don't know"...I have to stop saying that! |
