Kalan Porter begins life after Idol
Just barely a week after capturing Canadian Idol glory, Kalan Porter is trying to get comfortable in his new skin as a celebrity.
From writing songs in his basement to recording tracks in the studio, the soft-spoken 18-year-old has been thrust into the national spotlight, leaving behind the anonymity he once had in his hometown of Medicine Hat, Alta. But, Porter isn't complaining. As he tells CTV's etalk, he's just having fun with his newfound fame -- from being recognized in elevators to hearing his song on the radio. "It's been a little weird. I still feel like the same average, normal guy…but it's a lot of fun," Porter says. But after months of performing in front of frenzied fans and inciting screams loud enough to blow out an eardrum, this young Canadian Idol isn't letting the hype get to his head. "I'm just trying to stay focused on what I came into this whole thing to do and stay focused on where I was before all this…playing at little cafes where no one's listening to you," Porter says. The accomplished violin player, who seemed to breeze through the intense competition in Canadian Idol, is currently enjoying radio air play with his debut single, "Awake in a Dream", that's set to hit stores Oct. 5.
