Top 10: Interview with Shane Wiebe
Shane Wiebe, one of the newest members of the elite Top 10, chatted with Eye on Idol about what it's like to be Canada's top choice, his Idol experiences and what area of his performance he'd like to practice in front of the mirror! Idol: So, how are you feeling today? Shane: Wow, isn't that the question of the day? It's quite an amazing feeling and I've kind of been saying to other people, I think by the time I figure out what I'm feeling the competition will be long over. It certainly feels wonderful to be wanted by Canada. Idol: How did you sleep? Shane: I didn't really sleep all that much. Idol: So how have your eating habits been coming along? Have you noticed that you're not eating like you normally eat? Shane: It seems that way sometimes. I'll only have maybe one or two meals a day, but I'll eat a lot, like I'm storing up, so I'll stuff my face then that's fine for the rest of the day. Idol: After you were picked for the Top 10, did you make any phone calls right away? Is there someone you needed to call? Shane: A lot of people that were close to me were there, like my mother, my wife and her family was there. Later on I did call my sister. I wanted to make sure that they watched the show. It's three hours behind. I had a call and they left a message, "Let me know what happened." So I called them back. Idol: Being in demand for all of these interviews and appearances, is this something you think you could get used to? Shane: I was thinking about that today and I don't think I could ever get used to it. I look around and it's just so intriguing to me that people are so keenly interested in what I have to say. You know, they're asking me questions and it's scary. But at the same time it's a real privilege to know that there can potentially be millions of people that are actually interested in what I have to say. And that's really quite mind-blowing. Idol: So you're a perogie salesman? Shane: That job actually ended before I left. They're such a small company so they couldn't handle the contingency of me being gone for either a week or three months. Idol: So you had to choose? Shane: I took a chance and it paid off. The experience alone has been worth it. If nothing ever came of it and I just went home and didn't make the wildcard show, then that would be fine. I'd come back and finish my degree and start looking for work and that would be completely fine with me. The people I've met and the relationships I've developed, and the experiences I've had to work with people like Debra Byrd and all the producers, wow! Idol: Looking at yourself perform is there anything that you saw that you would like to change or enhance for your next performance? Shane: I was almost, to the point, entertained about my facial expressions. I think I'm gonna do a lot more practicing in the mirror and if I annoy myself then I'll probably be annoying the rest of the country. I guess you're your own worst critic. That's what it really comes down to. Idol: And, what would be the first thing you'd buy if you won? Shane: I have not even thought about that one. I would be a lot more logical about it first, I would pay down some debts and then with what's left I'd have a little fun. |
