Top 10: Interview with Theresa Sokyrka
Saskatoon's Theresa Sokyrka, just fresh from becoming the fifth competitor to make the elite Idol Top 10, shared her thoughts with Eye on Idol about being one step closer to fulfilling her dream -- to play music for the rest of her life. Idol: First of all, how did you sleep? Theresa: I slept like a baby...the best sleep. Idol: What did you eat for breakfast? Theresa: I had a croissant...but usually I eat egg whites. That's all I had time for. Idol: Are you noticing that you're eating a little different because of the schedule or the nerves? Is everything still normal for you? Theresa: Well, I don't really think it's hit me yet. You know I think it's this big, long, drawn-out dream -- an amazing dream. But I don't think that it's really gonna hit me until I go back home. There's a lot of support back there, I can't wait to see everybody. Idol: Who was the first person you called to break the good news? Theresa: Well, it was a group of people...the musicians that I met at Red Deer College. I phoned them. They were the very first group of people I called because they've been behind me so much. Even last season they were like, "Theresa you should try out next year." I was like, "Oh my god, I would never ever get close to anything." Idol: Is that the only reason why you didn't try out last year? Theresa: Yeah, I didn't think it was for me. I had no idea that I could do it. I thought I would choke. Idol: With everything that's happened today, with all the attention and interviews, do you feel yourself going towards what exactly you thought the Idol experience would be? Theresa: It's so much more. I feel like (life) is unrecognizable because I've never been so close to doing music for my whole life. Before it was just a pipe dream and it was something that I never thought was really gonna happen and that I would fall into some degree that I didn't really want to go into. It's so incredible. Idol: Do you think you could get used to this? Theresa: Oh my god, yes. Absolutely! I love the lifestyle. I love getting barely any sleep and just working, working, working...music has been something that has fuelled me for so long. Idol: You've got some time before competition for you resumes again. Do you have gigs that you're still going to do? Theresa: Every Sunday night I have a gig. They're actually going to film me doing a gig, I think. So that's a really exciting thing. Idol: Is there anything that you saw in your performance that you would change in the next, to do better as you move forward? Theresa: Well, I'm just gonna keep trying to get better at singing. Practice, practice and practice and hopefully, I'm crossing my fingers, maybe I'll be able to bring my guitar on stage. That would be an absolute dream of mine. Idol: And, what would be the first thing you'd buy if you won? Theresa: My old guitar back at Long & McQuade in Saskatoon (laughs). I sold it back to them because I needed money for the Top 100. I was broke. |
