According to his mother, Kalan Porter was able to hum parts of Brahm's Lullaby at 18 months. He hasn't stopped singing since.
Top 10 Song List: Awake in a Dream Top 32 Song List: Lady Kalan took classical voice lessons from 10 to 14 and at 16 began singing in his family rock band, where he also plays guitar, bass and piano. Kalan is also an accomplished violin and viola player, which he has studied since he was eight. He continues to perform solo, with a quartet and in an orchestra as well as teach six violin students. Kalan grew up working on his family's fifth generation buffalo/cattle ranch, where he fed, weaned, corralled and branded livestock. He recently completed his first year in the Commerce program at Medicine Hat College. Kalan loves steak and sushi, the Medicine Hat Tigers and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He likes to snowboard, wakeboard, play volleyball, run and "could not live" without his car. Kalan is "game for just about any activity," and has skydived, white water rafted and scuba dived. Kalan's Canadian idol? "People like Rick Hansen who have overcome adversity to achieve something that makes a difference in the lives of Canadians," he says. KALAN PORTER ROCKS CANADA AS CANADIAN IDOL WINNER• An 18-year-old ranch hand from Medicine Hat Alberta, Kalan Porter won the Canadian Idol competition on September 16, 2004 beating out 8.977 other competitors. He immediately signed a recording contract with Sony / BMG Music Canada. • The next day, Sony BMG released Awake in a Dream, the ballad then went on to become eight times platinum and remain on the top of Canada's single charts for over three months. It was the biggest-selling single debut ever for a Canadian artist. • Porter's debut, full-length CD, 219 Days, was released on November 23, 2004 and debuted at Number Four on Nielsen's SoundScan charts. • 219 Days is already double platinum (over 200,000 unit shipped), an amazing feat for a Canadian artist. The disc has outsold new CDs from artists such as Gwen Stefani, Destiny's Child and Britney Spears. • Porter's second single, "Single," was released in early February of 2005 and is currently climbing the Top 40 charts. • The video for "Single" is in heavy rotation on MuchMusic, YTV and Musique Plus and has placed in the Top 10 in MuchMoreMusic's Countdown. • On February 4, 2005, Porter kicked off a cross-country concert tour which will see him play over 40 dates in 50 nights. The tour is sold-out across the country, including Toronto's legendary Massey Hall. |
