Richie Wilcox - 2003 Top 11
Richie is back in Halifax pursuing the acting and directing career he began after graduating with honors from the Theatre Studies program at Dalhousie's Kings College in 2002. Fortunately for Richie fans, he's singing here and there as well! Early fall, Richie performed in Atlantic Fringe Festival with Angels and Heroes www.angelsandheroes.0catch.com – the theatre company he co-founded in Halifax. Their hilarious and edgy entry was a musical version of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, called Pussy on a Shingle. In December, Richie was invited to be an Assistant Director for Neptune Theatre's Christmas Production, A Gift to Last. He directed the production's play-within-a-play for which he worked with a number of different children's choirs, performed in the show himself. Other holiday appearances included: The Children's Christmas Concert in Toronto, part of First Night celebrations; the Dalhousie Christmas in Song concert at the Rebecca Cohn Theatre; Christmas Daddies, an annual telethon that raises money to help the underprivileged children in the Maritime provinces have a better Christmas. Next up was Blind Date with a Star. Richie was among the more than 50 well-known personalities from Nova Scotia's entertainment, sports, media and political scenes who participated as event hosts. They joined close to five hundred guests for an event that garnered a great deal of media attention all in support of the Learning Disabilities Association of Nova Scotia. This was very closely followed by Richie's directorial return to Angels and Heroes (A&H). He directed the dark but moving Philip Ridley comedy The Pitchfork Disney to excellent reviews. The Halifax Herald's Year in Review listed A&H as one of Nova Scotia's leading new theatre troupes, and one prominent theatre critic wrote "if you can only see one piece of live theatre this year, see an Angels and Heroes production". Richie then stepped onto the stage in the A&H interpretation of Sam Sheperd's Cowboys #2. He has most recently developed an Irish accent for a production of Martin Mcdonagh's The Lonesome West, scheduled to hit a Halifax theatre the last week of May. The production was sponsored by St. Mary's University in conjunction with an International Irish Studies Conference. Richie is still doing public appearances because of Canadian Idol and most recently was invited to do motivational speeches for the drama group at his former highschool and at a community career fair. Of course he threw in a song or two, much to the enjoyment of the audiences. Richie also judged an idol Contest at a Nova Scotia political convention and in June will judge and perform at an MS Society fundraiser & Battle of the Bands. On top of all that, he writes a weekly Reality TV review column for The Halifax Daily News. His picture is now on billboards in Halifax celebrating the HFX entertainment section's 1st anniversary with The Daily News. Starting June 1st he will be covering Canadian Idol season two. Summer 2004: Richie will flex his acting and singing muscles in the role of Fagan in the Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre production of Oliver, one of the world's most colorful and best-loved musicals. You an also catch Richie in the company's production of The Robert Munsch Stories. Some of Nova Scotia's finest playwrights, directors and performers have honed their skills at Nova Scotia's Festival Antigonish. www.stfx.ca/festivalantigonish/.
