CTV Television Inc. Policy re: Advertising
As Canada's largest private broadcaster, CTV offers a wide range of quality news, sports, information, and entertainment programming. CTV is mindful of its licensing obligations, and is also committed to ensuring that the quality of both the programming and advertising that airs on the network is of the highest standard.
The CRTC's role, under the Broadcasting Act, is to regulate and supervise all aspects of the Canadian broadcasting system in a manner that respects freedom of expression and the journalistic, creative and programming independence enjoyed by the broadcasters. The Commission is not a censor board, nor does it generally intervene in the day-to-day editorial decisions of the broadcasters. The CRTC notes that "although broadcasters are subject to specific provisions for federal, provincial and municipal elections, they are not obliged to air any commercial message or public service announcements, including advocacy ads." (CRTC website on Advertising and Commercials)
CTV exercises its rights to determine commercial acceptance. This includes the right to reject commercials CTV deems may have any kind of negative impact on its business.
