Tips to help pets drop the extra pounds:

  • Consult with a vet regularly and before putting your pet on a weight reduction program.
  • Avoid feeding table scraps and treats. These are often high in fat and calories which contribute to weight gain. Look for low calorie cat or dog treats and use in moderation.
  • Reduce the size of your pet's meals (especially if you train with treats). It is best to measure the amount of food you give your pet at each serving.
  • Increase the amount of exercise your pet receives. This can simply mean an extra walk or 10 minutes additional playtime. This can be easier with a dog than a cat, but taking the time to have your feline play chase with a toy on a string or a flashlight on the wall will do your cat good, especially if your cat stays indoors.
  • A great way to create a proper diet for your pet is to promote a healthy balanced feeding routine consisting of the right mix of formats and formulations that include a combination of wet and dry food and the right kind and amount of snacks and treats. The most common problems a cat and dog face being overweight, poor oral care and for cats, hairballs and stones.
