Celine Dion
Columbia/Sony
|
 |
She
is the best-selling artist of her generation, having sold an astonishing
total of 150 million albums worldwide. Celine Dion returned from a two-year
hiatus with last year's much-awaited release, A New Day Has Come. The
title track promptly returned Celine to her familiar perch atop the charts,
and the album showcased her mastery of such diverse styles as pop classics
(Nat King Cole's "Nature Boy"), dramatic ballads, and up-tempo
dance music. Dion's upcoming three-year engagement at Caesars Palace will
cement her status as a performer par excellence.

An extended and well-deserved break from the business certainly didn't
diminish the creative gifts or the popularity of famed songstress Sarah
McLachlan. Her new CD, Afterglow, soared straight to the top of the
Canadian charts, and brought her both JUNO and Grammy nominations. A
42-date North American tour this summer will reunite Sarah with legions
of fans still cherishing memories of her groundbreaking Lilith Fair
tours.

Avril Lavigne
Arista/BMG

It
has been an incredible past two years for teen rocker Avril Lavigne. Napanee's
biggest export, she had a worldwide smash hit with her debut, Let Go,
hit No. 1 on Billboard with her "Complicated" single, and of
course carted home four JUNO Awards last year. That just shows the power
of a combination punch of sassy vocals, strong melodies and punkish energy.

Nickelback
EMI

With international sales of over 10 million copies, 2001s Silver Side Up placed Vancouver-based hard rockers Nickelback in the rock elite. That album featured one of the most-played singles in radio history, "How You Remind Me." The band is back on top with their fourth CD, The Long Road, already a double platinum smash here. "We've pushed things further in every way possible," says mainman Chad Kroeger of the release. Nickelback and Chad won a 2003 JUNO as Songwriter Of The Year.
