ISSUES - ECONOMY/TRADE

Trade

Will continue a free trade policy that opens markets. Will aggressively pursue remedies when American interests are harmed. Would end tax breaks that encouraging "offshoring" jobs. Review all trade agreements. Expand trade adjustment compensation. Develop a "Buy American" policy.

Taxes

Calls for his 2002 tax cuts to be made permanent. Would repeal tax cuts for those Americans making more than $200,000 US per year. Would increase the child tax credit and cut middle class taxes.

Deficit

Would cut budget deficit in half over five years. Wants a presidential line-item veto to control spending. Wants Congress to pass budget enforcement legislation. Besides rolling back some Bush tax cuts, would put in a "real" spending cut.

Job Creation

Will base it in education reform (No Child Left Behind), lifelong learning and low taxes. Will create Economic Opportunity Zones. Support research and development initiatives. Proposes a new jobs tax credit. Would lower corporate taxes by five per cent. Would strengthen education and training, in part by establishing a National Education Trust Fund. Would make broadband Internet access more widely available and would strengthen research and development.
