OLYMPIC DEBUT
1924 Chamonix, France
ORIGINS
The fastest human powered, non-mechanically aided sport was born in the Netherlands, with the first races on record in 1676.
Holland hosted the first world championships in 1889, and has dominated just about every meet since.
Originally, speed skating was a men's sport in the Olympic Games. Women's races were added to the programme in 1960. For the Olympic Games, the rules call for an indoor oval-shaped track. |
