OLYMPIC DEBUT
1924 Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France
ORIGINS
Ski jumping was made popular with the first competition held in Trysil, Norway in 1862. The first jumps went distances of 15 to 20 metres.
After the first World War, an aerodynamic technique known as the Kongsberger Technique (upper body bent at the hips, wide forward lean, arms extended) was developed by Thulin Thams. This new technique led to jumps of more than 100 metres, in time for the very first Olympic Winter Games in 1924. |
