ORIGINS

Alpine skiing evolved from cross-country skiing. The first alpine skiing competition was held in the 1850s in Oslo.

In World Cup competition, points are awarded in accordance with participants placing in each individual race and the athlete with the most points from all disciplines is declared overall champion at the end of the season.

Slalom, GS, Super-G, and Downhill are the four disciplines, with Downhill being the fastest event and Slalom being the most technical.
