Best Supporting Actress

Unlike the Best Supporting Actor nominees, it seems like the women have it all locked up. Or one woman does, at least. Rachel Weisz, who plays an ill-fated activist in the thriller The Constant Gardner, has so far made a clean sweep of both the Golden Globes and the SAG awards, making her a safe bet to take home the gold statuette.

Not that the other nominees aren’t deserving.

Michelle Williams makes you forget you ever heard the words “Dawson’s Creek,” with her portrayal of a betrayed wife in Brokeback Mountain, while previous Best Actress winner Frances McDormand is, as always, on top of her game in North Country. Catherine Keener, who receives her second Best Supporting Actress nomination, is equally worthy for her portrayal of novelist Harper Lee in Capote, but like her competitors, she’s unlikely to overtake Weisz. As for Amy Adams, she may have been an unknown before her turn as a pregnant southerner in the meet-the-parents indie Junebug, but her performance is earning her big recognition. Still, it’s unlikely enough voters have seen the film to cast the requisite number of ballots her way.
