Mike Taffarel is a 29-year veteran of Algoma Steel where he is currently employed as a mechanical maintenance technician in the Plate and Strip Department. Fifty-three years old, he is married, the father of four and a resident of Sault Ste. Marie since the age of five. A steelworker and member of United Steelworkers Local 2251, Mike is a worker politician representing the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada.

Mike is calling on the workers and residents of Sault Ste. Marie to stand up and oppose the attempt by New York hedge funds and other vulture capitalists to raid the treasury of Algoma Steel, as such action threatens the economic viability of both Algoma Steel and the entire community.

Mike is also deeply concerned about Canada’s party-dominated political system in which the workers and people do not have any way to direct government to address their concerns.

"This has to change," says Mike. "Workers must be empowered, as the producers of all wealth, to put our concerns on the government agenda and to have political solutions that favour our interests both during and between elections."
