Walt Lastewka was first elected to the House of Commons in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004. Mr. Lastewka has served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology and as Chair of the Subcommittee on Committee Budgets.

In 2003 Prime Minister Paul Martin appointed him Parliamentary Secretary of Public Works and Government Services, Privy Council, with special emphasis on Procurement Review. Mr. Lastewka’s procurement study, included in Budget 2005, is now being implemented government-wide, and will save taxpayers 2.5 billion dollars over 5 years.

Mr. Lastewka also chaired the Task Force on Commercializing Government Science Research, served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry, and as Federal Caucus Advocate for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises.

Mr. Lastewka’s career spans 30 years as an Industrial Engineer and Senior Executive at General Motors in St. Catharines, Windsor and Oshawa. He served as Chair of the V-6 Engine Business Team at GM Power Train Division, overseeing five plants in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

He is involved with local organizations such as the St. Catharines Museum, the Children’s Discovery Centre, and the World Rowing and SoapBox Derby. He served as Junior Chamber International Vice-President in 1976 and received the Young Citizen Award in 1977.

Last year Mr. Lastewka received the Niagara Grape and Wine Festival Business Citizen of the Year award and the Royal Canadian Legion Friendship Award. He is a graduate of the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, the Executive Program at Western University and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Economics from the State University of New York. He is married to Carol, and has two daughters, Tamara and Virginia.
