Richard Mahoney has been a political advocate for Ottawa Centre for over 20 years, working as a Special Assistant to senior cabinet ministers, practicing law and getting actively involved with the community, along with his wife and three young children. Richard served as a Director of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Foundation for seven years. He has been an active participant in the health care debate, believing that health care must be well-funded, accessible and timely. The Ottawa City Council appointed Richard as the Capital Ward representative for the City Steering Committee on Traffic Calming in 2001. Richard has also been involved with the Glebe Community Association Traffic Committee. Richard and his wife Kathy have proudly made Ottawa Centre their home for over 14 years. Their three children attend school in our community and Richard has been active in provincial education issues. He has participated in Ottawa’s drive to keep public schools open and has been an active volunteer for the Glebe’s Good Morning Pre-School. Richard is counsel to the law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP, where he has practised public and regulatory law advocacy. In his professional capacity, Richard has represented refugee claimants, immigrants requiring legal aid and new Canadians. Richard often provides free legal advice to new Canadians. He believes that new immigrants must be better supported in order to successfully become part of their new communities. Richard was elected President of the Ontario Liberal Party from 1992 to 1995. Previously, he was President of the Young Liberals of Canada in the mid-eighties and was a dedicated proponent of reform in the federal Liberal Party at the Halifax Reform Conference in 1985. Richard worked as a Special Assistant to former Prime Minister John Turner and several senior cabinet ministers, then as Executive Assistant to Paul Martin from 1988 to 1990. For seven years, he has been an active commentator on politics and public policy for various media, such as TVO’s Studio 2. Richard’s commitment to public life and to his community have led to his desire to be the Member of Parliament for Ottawa Centre. He is working to strengthen healthcare, support educational opportunities, help the technology sector and hold down the costs of owning or renting a home.
