Macklin, Paul Harold

Ontario, Northumberland - Quinte West, Liberal Party of Canada

The Honourable Paul Macklin, P.C., M.P., was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Northumberland - Quinte West on November 27, 2000, and subsequently re-elected on June 28, 2004.

Since first becoming a Member of Parliament, Mr. Macklin has dedicated his efforts to various projects of importance to his riding, including an active lobbying campaign for enhanced federal support for Eastern Ontario. This effort resulted in the formulation of a multi-million dollar development strategy for communities in Northumberland - Quinte West and Eastern Ontario.

Mr. Macklin was first appointed by Prime Minister Paul Martin as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada in February 2002. In his capacity as PS to Minister Irwin Cotler, Paul has represented both the Government of Canada and his constituency on the international stage.

Mr. Macklin has also served on the Prime Ministers Caucus Task Force on Future Opportunities in Farming; the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights; the Joint Standing Committee on the Scrutiny of Regulations; as well as the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Early in his first mandate, Mr. Macklin was unanimously elected to the position of Chair of the Eastern Ontario Liberal Caucus.

Born and raised in Northumberland - Quinte West, has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Western Ontario, as well as a law degree from the University of Windsor.

After being called to the Ontario bar, Mr. Macklin joined the Toronto law firm of Davies, Ward & Beck. In 1974 he and his wife Joan returned to Northumberland - Quinte West where he became a partner in the law firm of Stewart, Mitchell & Macklin. Paul, Joan and their family continue to live on a portion of the original family farm. They are the proud grandparents of one granddaughter, Taylor Macklin.
