Pettigrew, Pierre

Pierre Pettigrew was elected to the House of Commons in a March 1996 by-election. He was re-elected in 1997, 2000 and 2004.

Mr. Pettigrew first joined the Cabinet in January 1996 as Minister for International Co-operation and Minister responsible for La Francophonie. From 1996 to 1999, he served as Minister of Human Resources Development. Appointed Minister for International Trade in 1999, he chaired the Ministerial Meeting of the Free Trade Area of the Americas in Toronto in November 1999, chaired the Working Group on Implementation at the World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference in Seattle in December 1999, and chaired the Working Group on Singapore Issues at the WTO Ministerial Conference in Doha, Qatar in November 2001.

In 2003, he was named Minister of Health, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister responsible for Official Languages. And in 2004, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs.

A former business consultant, Mr. Pettigrew served as vice-president of Samson Bélair Deloitte & Touche International (Montreal) from 1985 to 1995. In this capacity, he advised companies with dealings in international markets. He had previously served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada from 1981 to 1984, as executive assistant to the Leader of the Quebec Liberal Party from 1978 to 1981, and as director of the Political Committee, NATO Assembly, in Brussels, from 1976 to 1978.

Mr. Pettigrew holds a bachelor of arts in philosophy from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and a masters of philosophy in International Relations from Balliol College, Oxford University, England.
