After more than one and a half million votes, 25-year-old Denys Drozdyuk, a ballroom dancer from Toronto, was named Canada's Favourite Dancer.
He was rendered speechless, doubling over in shock as host Leah Miller revealed his win on the So You Think You Can Dance Canada Season 3 finale on Sunday night. "Thank you very much," he said, bowing in front of an ecstatic audience.
Confetti cannons burst gold and silver flakes on the stage as the dancers lifted Denys high above their arms as Denys' mom wept in the audience.
From his audition in Montreal, Denys brought his versatility and strong work ethic to the competition, making him a contender from the very first show. "You are a great example, an inspiration for a generation of dancers to come," Jean Marc said before the verdict was revealed.
Luther noted his incredible passion. "It comes through the cameras every time you get on that stage," he said.
Denys now carries the title of Canada's Favourite Dancer and has received the prize of $100,000 and a 2010 Mazda2.
Runner-up Amanda Cleghorn, a 19-year-old contemporary dancer from Mississauga, Ont., was thrilled to also receive the keys to a Mazda2, and after a surprise announcement, also received $10,000 from the newly created Top 4 fund.
Leah Miller revealed SYTYCDC's Executive Producer Sandra Faire personally created this Top 4 fund so all the dancers would be rewarded for their hard work. Top 3 and 4 dancers, Janick Arseneau, 20, from Bathurst, N.B., and Jeff Mortensen, 22, from Edmonton would also each receive $5000.
Top 21 reunited
Before Denys was crowned Canada's Favourite Dancer, the show kicked off with a high-energy Flashdance-inspired theatre number choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. Wearing leg warmers and headbands, the dancers flooded the stage with this high energy, trick-filled number.
An expanded judging panel
Over the course of the two-hour Finale, the dancers performed the most memorable duets from Season 3 for judges Jean Marc Genereux, Tré Armstrong, Blake McGrath, Luther Brown and guest judges Rex Harrington, Sergio Trujillo, Mary Murphy and Mia Michaels.
Salsa: Amanda and Denys
Amanda and Denys were the first couple on stage and performed Gustavo Vargas' spicy salsa from the Top 4 show. Amanda was costumed in red sequined fringe and for the second time in a week, Denys performed the challenging lift, raising Amanda high above his head, while keeping up with the fast footwork.
Hip-hop: Nathalie and Mackenzie
Next up, Nathalie and Mackenzie performed Sho-Tyme's hip-hop number from the Top 20 show. Costumed in red and black, these two contemporary dancers wowed the judges again with the lightning speed choreography.
Contemporary: Kirsten and Jera
From the very first episode of the Season, Kirsten and Jera danced Mandy Moore's contemporary number. With candles dotting the stage, this contemporary-ballerina and ballet-breaker performed this emotional piece about the power of memory.
Afro-jazz: Janick and Shavar
Sean Cheesman's Top 22 Afro-jazz piece was up next, performed by Janick and Shavar. The number was inspired by jungle creatures and continued to impress the audience.
Hustle: Charlene and Jeff
The Top 18 fast-paced hustle choreographed by Maria Torres had Jeff and Charlene performing wild lifts at lightning speed, including a daring shoulder spin. After they performed, Jeff revealed that over the last few weeks his shoulder has been dislocating, but was sure to add he's okay.
Theatre: Danielle and Sebastian
The fortune teller-inspired dance Danielle and Sebastian first performed in the Top 20 show was next. Choreographer Sean Cheesman used the contemporary dancers' love for creating characters to create high drama on stage.
Contemporary: Nathalie and Mackenzie
From the Top 16 show, Nathalie and Mackenzie performed a contemporary routine by Blake McGrath. With doves and candles on stage, the pair performed this lyrical and emotional routine with passion and intensity.
Contemporary: Amanda and Jeff
The show tackled many emotional issues this season, including eating disorders, illness and the loss of a child. From the Top 4 show, Amanda and Jeff performed the difficult duet about domestic abuse, choreographed by Sabrina Matthews.
Hip-hop: Janick and Mackenzie
Luther Brown's Top 8 hip-hop number was up next. Costumed in black pleather, Janick and Mackenzie attacked the choreography with fierce intensity. The entire judging table stood and gave the dancers a standing ovation.
Mambo: Edgar and Claudia...and a proposal!
From the Top 16 show, Gustavo Vargas' spicy salsa number was up next. Edgar partnered with Claudia, costumed in a sequined and feathered outfit, and their hips moved at lightning speed.
After they performed, Claudia's boyfriend and Season 1 dancer Francis Lafrenière came up on stage and proposed to a very surprised and very excited Claudia. There were tears all around and the happy couple left the stage together.
Theatre: Top 21
All of Season 3's dancers took to the stage next with Bill T. Jones' politically driven theatre piece. The music was infectious as the dancers performed the powerful and challenging movement.
Contemporary: Danielle and Denys
From the Top 8 show, Danielle and Denys performed an emotional tribute to Canada's fallen soldiers, choreographed by Sabrina Matthews. Denys played a solider, delivering the excruciating news that Danielle's character's husband wasn't coming home from war.
Tap: Justin Jackson
Mary introduced the next performer and as Jean Marc promised during Finals Week, tapper Justin Jackson took to the stage to perform his wild tap number. "He's one of my favourite tap dancers I've ever seen," Mary gushed.
Tango: Amanda and Denys
Flashing back to the first week of the show, Amanda and Denys performed a sultry tango choreography by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin.
Contemporary: Top 12
"I stand strong as a warrior, always, but I get knocked down," Mia Michaels said about her Top 12 piece that focused on rejection. Against a backdrop of dramatic lighting, Top 12 performed this deeply emotional choreography, leaping above the row of empty chairs.
Jazz: Top 10
The Top 10 took to the stage in a brand new jazz number choreography by Melissa Williams. This rock ‘n' roll inspired number saw the dancers flying and leaping across the stage. The piece ended with the Top 4 lit by spotlights at the very edge of the stage.
Jazz: Top 4…and Blake McGrath
Mia Michaels choreographed a special Top 4 group number to the music of judge and recording artist Blake McGrath joining them on stage. The movement was fierce as the dancers strutted along a catwalk, only to be joined by Blake himself.
Mazda2 Contest Winner
The President of Mazda, Don Romano, presented the keys to the lucky viewer who won a sporty Mazda2.
Contemporary: Amanda and Jeff
Amanda and Jeff performed Stacey Tookey's contemporary routine from the Top 8 show about the devastating reality of Early Onset Alzheimer's. "You are brilliant!" Leah told Stacey after the performance.
Reflections: Amanda and Jeff
Amanda fought tears when Leah asked what her time on the show has meant to her. "This experience means absolutely everything to me. I've learned so much," she said, excited by how much she's grown. "I love dance so much!"
Jeff told Leah he was inspired by the first season of the U.S. show and noted he was glad he didn't make it in the second season: "It was the kick in the pants I needed," he said. He thanked everyone who helped him along the way.
The judges gave them both a standing ovation.
Paso doblé: Janick and Denys
On a stage covered in rose petals, Janick and Denys performed the dramatic paso doblé choreographed by Season 1's Francis Lafrenière and Natalli Reznik. The judges gave them a standing ovation.
Reflections: Janick and Denys
Janick noted how excited she was to be here and that she even told her younger sister she wanted to be on the show years ago. "And here I am," she said. "Coming from a small town, it just proves that dreams do come true," Janick said.
"I've learned so much as a performer," Denys said, thanking the judges and choreographer. "Thank you for pushing me."
He added that he hopes to inspire Canadians with passion to pursue dance. "Don't stop your dreams."
Top 4 to Canada's Favourite Dancer
"You're all so deserving and so talented," Leah said, already starting to tear up. She revealed that Amanda made it to the Top 2, as did Denys. Janick and Jeff joined the rest of the Season 3 dancers.
The dancers hugged each other and the audience waited with bated breath as Leah opened the turquoise envelope to reveal Denys was Season 3's Favourite Dancer.
