Top 16
Kirsten Wicklund could not believe how restless she was during Finals Week. “I had no idea I would be so nervous dancing for the judges and on camera.” Refusing to let her nerves get the better of her, the Vancouver-born contemporary ballet dancer made it to the Top 22 of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA Season 3 and calls her success a dream come true. “I was shaking for the longest time after I found out and I just couldn’t believe it was actually happening.”
Kirsten believes her dedicated work ethic and extensive dance background is what will make her Canada’s Favorite Dancer. Training primarily in ballet, Kirsten has also gained experience in contemporary, modern, jazz and lyrical from the Goh Ballet Academy, Banff Centre for Performing Arts and NYCDA. Along the way, Kirsten credits her instructors for her success saying, “having the chance to tour and assist alongside friends, mentors and choreographers, who were such inspirations to me, has been gratifying and has shaped me as a person and dancer.” Working with the likes of Travis Wall, Paul Becker, Stacey Tookey, and Tokyo would be any dancer’s dream and she hopes it will give her an edge in the competition.
Kirsten says she loves yoga and travelling. She thinks viewers would be surprised to know that she likes to speak in a Russian accent for fun. “If you know me well, you know the accent, but I am NO expert...I promise it’s very rough around the edges.”
Having become a die-hard expert on previous seasons of the show, Kirsten thinks SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA is such an important opportunity for Canadians. “It’s an amazing platform for dancers from ANY background to explore their boundaries.”
Kirsten will be bringing her big personality to Season 3 and is ready for any style they throw at her, saying her most feared genre is “krumping. It is definitely the most opposite genre to ballet and contemporary, though I’m not afraid of a challenge!”
