Holiday Tabletop Trends

With the meal being the main event at most holiday events, a celebratory table sets the stage for great conversations and fond holiday memories. In the era of our mothers, aunts and grandmothers setting the holiday table, tastes tended towards the over-festive. Santa plates, reindeer napkins and ceramic elf candlesticks were de rigeur.

Now that you're in charge of the festivities, you'd like the look to be more like a magazine spread than country store display, but you're not really sure where to start.

Marie-Lou Gagnon, Tabletop & Specialty Kitchen Buyer for Home Outfitters, says, "Solid white never goes out of style, so why not dress up your basic whites to give them a more modern, festive feel without having to store them away after the holidays?" She recommends the following tips for dressing up your holiday table, while keeping things current.

  • Use coloured charger plates to add a festive touch. Metallics are hot this season
  • Choose a glossy finish over mattes to add drama
  • Try solid white bone china -- it's a more updated, formal option without feeling so traditional
  • Experiment with rippled bone china, which is a contemporary twist on a traditional material
  • Add metallic stemware for a touch of luxury, or opaque black for a more modern approach
  • Choose modern, clean lines for your flatware. Layer in some pattern with your table linens to add dimension
