Holiday Decorating in a Small Space
Many of us grew up in homes that were lavishly decorated for the holidays, homes worthy of the Darlings on “Dirty Sexy Money.”
The size of the Christmas tree was rarely in proportion to other items in the room and furniture was often moved to accommodate the great coniferous beacon of lights.
Nowadays, between first apartments, starter homes and downsizing, less square footage is presenting many Canadians with holiday decorating dilemmas.
Here are some ideas to turn your home into a winter wonderland -- without getting rid of the couch.
When floor space is an issue, look up
Hang decorations from your chandelier, mistletoe in doorways or stockings off that floating shelf. Wreaths, centrepieces, garlands and tabletop trees all provide that glorious hint of holiday without creating an obstacle course in your living room.
Opt for multipurpose items
A perfect example of double-duty decorating, many garden centres and florists sell rosemary in a mini-tree format. Ideal for a kitchen, these rosemary shrubs are fragrant, can hold a set of mini-lights and can be used for all your holiday roasting!
Use storable furniture
Don’t have the need, or the space, for formal dining year-round? Purchase or rent an inexpensive foldaway table and some attractive folding chairs. With a festive tablecloth and eye-catching place settings, your guests will be none the wiser.
Don’t just decorate – innovate!
Create decorations with photographs, found objects, heirlooms, collectibles and memorabilia. Rework items that remind you of happy times and holidays past in ways that will make your home joyful.
Don’t overdo it
Don’t put up so many decorations that your home looks like Santa threw up all over it. Too much will make your home feel cluttered and smaller. Plus, you’ll have more money leftover for gifts – perhaps something special for yourself? A little restraint when decorating deserves some indulgence!
