A whiff of fame
Perfume in a stocking is about as imaginative as red roses on Valentine’s Day. But find the right fragrance and you’ll strike the right note for many months to come.
If you are considering a celebrity scent, be prepared to nose around the fragrance counter for quite some time. According to Mintel, a market-research firm in Chicago, almost one in four of the top 100 women's prestige fragrances is either celebrity-created or celeb-endorsed. J-Lo alone must have half a dozen scents and ditto for Britney. From Beyonce to Celine, Paris and Prince, it seems anyone who’s anyone has bottled their image.
To help you navigate your way through the heady world of celebuscents we’ve picked some of our favourites.

L, a L.A.M.B. Frangrance by Gwen Stefani
Pop queen, fashion icon, über mom – Stefani can now add perfumerer to her resumé. Her first fragrance, “L” took 31 tries to perfect and featured florals like freesia, jasmine, rose, lily of the valley, orange blossom and sweet pea. A fresh, feminine scent. (Department and drug stores, $75 to $98) |

Intimately Beckham
Next under the nose are the His and Hers smells from Manchester’s footie hero and his pouty-princess wife. Victoria’s scent combines white flowers, tuberose, rose and vanilla, while David’s mixes grapefruit, cardamom, violet and amber. A match made in heaven. (The Bay, Shoppers and other drug stores, $65 to $85) |
Enchanting
From Quebec Songstress Celine Dion comes a sequel to her previous self-named scent. As powerful as one of her ballads, this one combines osmanthus, cyclamen, orchid, gardenia and freesia. (Department and drug stores, $49 to $69) |
Covet
Fresh off the heels (Blahniks, no doubt) of her success with “Lovely,” Sarah Jessica Parker’s second scent is a little more daring. "If I get the opportunity, my next scent will be genderless. Fuller. Riskier,” she has noted. The layering of lemon, lavender, chocolate, honeysuckle, magnolia, muguet, musk, teakwood and amber definitely make for a darker, deeper experience. ($69 to $89) |
Shania Starlight
Developed by the same perfumer behind Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy and J Lo Miami Glow, the queen of country pop’s latest fragrance features top notes of mandarin, lemon, apple blossom and white freesia. If that don’t impress you much, perhaps you’ll appreciate the magnolia, gardenia, jasmine and musk at the heart of the scent. (Shoppers, Zellers and other mass retailers, $36.) |
White Diamonds
How could we leave without a spritz of Elizabeth Taylor? An original celebuscent, Taylor launched White Diamonds in 1991. It still remains one of the top-selling fragrances. (The Bay, major departments stores, $63) |
