Update:
Dean finished a poor third in Wisconsin. He formally withdrew from the race on Feb. 18.
He said he would endorse the eventual Democratic nominee and urged his supporters to continue working to defeat U.S. President George W. Bush.

- Born in New York City, Nov. 17, 1948
- Father was an investment banker
- Married to Judith Stein for 22 years, with two children
- He was raised Episcopalian but is now a Congregationalist. His wife is Jewish and his children have been raised in the Jewish faith

- Was a medical doctor in Vermont in practice with his wife
Political, public experience:
- State legislator in Vermont, 1982-1986
- Lieutenant-governor of Vermont, 1986-1991
- Governor of Vermont, 1991-2002
Political missteps, liabilities:
- Many minor ones; has traditionally had a 'shoot from the lip' style. His worst moment came in a speech after the Jan. 19 Iowa Caucuses now immortalized as I Have A Scream.
- Avoided military service on a medical deferral, then went skiing for that winter in Colorado
Key policy stances:
- Outspoken opponent of Iraq war
- Soft on gun control (sees it as a liability)
- Committed to balanced budgets
- Would repeal the tax cuts of U.S. President George Bush
- Supported gay civil unions as governor
- Would expand gov't health insurance, but wouldn't abandon employer-based private health insurance; views single-payer plan as impossible
Funds raised (to Dec. 31, 2003): $41.3 million US
Endorsements:
- Al Gore, the 2000 Democratic presidential nominee
- Tom Harkin, senior senator for Iowa
- Carole Moseley Braun, another contender, dropped out on Jan. 15, 2004 and endorsed Dean
- Until the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, had run second to Richard Gephardt for Congressional and Senate endorsements
- On the weekend of Feb. 7-8, two unions which had supported him withdrew their support and endorsed John Kerry instead
