New York City
A first-time host to the GOP convention, organizers hope NYC can give
their party the star power it needs to capture the attention of jaded
voters. Having the city's former mayor and state governor on hand
will help the party set a moderate tone -- even if the party's
nominees remain staunch conservatives.

There is, of course, tremendous political meaning behind staging the
convention in the shadow of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. What
better place for Bush to underscore the war on terror he has banked
his first term and re-election hopes on?

Presenting the party as an appealing choice to urban sophisticates,
however, is a risk -- demonstrated by the crowds who took to the
streets in protest before the convention was even underway.
