Giller Prize jury biosWarren Cariou Warren Cariou was born and raised in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, and much of his writing is informed by his connections to that community. He studied English at the University of Saskatchewan and then at the University of Toronto, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1998. Cariou has published two books: a collection of novellas entitled The Exalted Company of Roadside Martyrs and a memoir entitled Lake of the Prairies, which was awarded the 2002 Drainie-Taylor Prize for Biography and was shortlisted for the 2004 Charles Taylor Prize. He also writes literary criticism, primarily about Aboriginal literature. Warren Cariou now lives in Winnipeg with his wife Alison Calder, where they both teach in the English department at the University of Manitoba. Elizabeth Hay is the author of two highly acclaimed, bestselling novels. Hay has published six books in all, both fiction and creative non-fiction. Her first novel, A Student of Weather (2000), was a finalist for The Giller Prize. It won the Canadian Authors Association MOSAID Technologies Inc. Award for Fiction and the TORGI Award. Her most recent novel, Garbo Laughs (2003) won the Ottawa Book Award and was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award. Her short story collection, Small Change (1997), was a finalist for the Governor General's Award, the Trillium Award, and the Rogers Communications Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. In 2002, Hay received the Marian Engel Award. Elizabeth Hay lives in Ottawa with her husband. Richard B. Wright has written 10 novels, including Tourists, Sunset Manor, and The Age of Longing, which was nominated for both The Giller Prize and a Governor General's Award. In 2001 Clara Callan won The Giller Prize, the Governor General's Award for Fiction and Ontario's Trillium Book Award. Wright's book In the Middle of A Life won the City of Toronto Book Award and the Faber Award for Fiction in the U.K. In 2004, Wright published his most recent book Adultery, which received widespread critical accolades. He has also published a children's book, One John A Too Many. Wright's work has been published in Canada, the US, and the UK to outstanding reviews and has been translated many times. He lives in St. Catharines, Ontario with his wife Phyllis. |
