My military hero is my father, the late Maj. N.K. Sharpe. Dad served in the Canadian Army Ordnance Corps/Logistics) for 30 years, retiring in 1979. Under the auspices of the UN he served in Cyprus and in the Golan Heights and in addition to a distinguished career he raised a family of 5 children. Dad personified professionalism and dedication to duty. Dad placed service to country above personal gain -- a value passed on to all of his children. Brian Sharpe

My military hero is my son Corp. James Robson. He is a 22-year-old soldier who started his military career when he was 12 and joined the Cadets. He then joined the Reserves while in high school. Then he made his way up to Regional Force. James is based now in Edmonton, Alta. We, his family, live in Cambridge, Ont. These soldiers put their country first. With that comes a lot of sacrifices and loneliness and worse, some sacrifice their lives. They do this and never complain. Cheryl Robson

I would like to submit my husband as my military hero. Sgt. Sylvain Madore started his career at 18 as a reservist, later joining the Regular Forces. He has over 32 years service. He has served twice in Afghanistan in the recent years, but did tours that included Cyprus, Golan Heights and many more. His dedication to the Forces and the love Sylvain has for our country always give me the strength to support him while he is away. He is an inspiration for me to do the best I can to support our country. Marie-Josee Maheu

My Military Hero is my nephew Cpl. William Werth. In Afghanistan he witnessed many things that someone at the tender age of 21 should never see. On July 1, 2010 Werth and his group detonated a buried IED. His sergeant lost his leg in the explosion and William sustained massive facial damage and ended up losing the sight in his left eye. When he returned home to Sunnybrook Hospital and then finally to his parents' home in Waterloo, Ont., I witnessed first-hand his bravery. His first and only thoughts were not of himself but of those that he left behind. Words cannot express how proud I am! Jenniffer Fleet

On June 5, 2010, my husband was in Afghanistan for his second tour of duty when he stepped on an IED and immediately lost part of his left leg; resulting in amputation. He was given his first prosthetic leg at St. John's Rehab Hospital, and in January 2011 he ran a 5k fundraiser to raise money for the hospital that helped him walk again. Since then he has run 5 half-marathons for Soldier On, an organization that gets injured military moving again and back into sports. He is also part of the injured soldier network, sharing about his experience. He is a role model and an inspiration to many, including myself and our son. James MacIntyre is my hero. Lisa MacIntyre

This Remembrance Day my thoughts will be with only one person: my grandfather, Robert McGhie of Nelson, B.C. Immigrating to Canada from Scotland as a teenager, Bob joined the military because he was homesick and knew he would be sent to Europe. He spent the next 4 years fighting across Europe, even landing on Juneau Beach on D-Day, helping to liberate France. I admire his strength and his sacrifice inspires me every day. If his generation could do so much for the future, we can all strive to do the same. I love you Grandpa, and I'm so grateful. Jordan Peterman

My military hero is my grandfather, Sidney Glass, currently at Toronto's Sunnybrook Hospital. I grew up with his stories of going to war a young man and fighting for not just Canada's freedom, but the world's. He would go on to share those stories with students. He would tell about watching his best friend die, being the only one of his Queen's Own Rifles platoon to survive. My grandfather is the face of Canada's WWII veterans - a man in his 80s who sits in a hospital bed. He fought for his country. He fought for me and he fought for my daughter - his great grand-daughter. Jordan Glass

I would like to honor my father, Matthew Moralis. He was an 1RCR Infantryman and had his jump-wings. One night - while my mother was pregnant - his parachute collapsed during an exercise and sent him into the ground. He is now unable to walk and is in a wheelchair. Despite being injured, being in the military was his pride and joy and he looks back on the days of his career with great fondness. He has taught me how important it is to stand up for our country and I am now in the military myself. Kathlyn Trozzi

My military hero is my late common-law husband, MCpl Randy Murphy. Randy was deeply devoted to his country and his 19-year career in the CF as an army medic involved in many overseas tours including Rwanda, Bosnia and Afghanistan. Tragically, Randy was a victim of suicide and passed away on January 24, 2009. Although you won't find his name engraved on a memorial, he is very much a causality of war and his wounds, though invisible, were very real. The sacrifices Randy made throughout his career will always serve as a source of inspiration to those who knew him. Jennifer Clinton

Grampa Joe was one of 81 survivers after his ship, the HMCS St. Croix was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U305 on September 20, 1943. He was picked up by another ship the next day but perished after that ship was torpedoed and sunk. I am writing to tell you about MY military hero, my Dad. His name is Andre Boudreau and he has been inspiring me since I was a very young child. He has been in the military since he was 17 when he decided life in a small fishing village wasn't for him. With only a grade 9 education, my dad managed to overcome many challenges, become trained and succeed in the military. This year he finished up a career highlight as the first Master Warrant Officer for the Chaplain Branch working directly with the Chaplain General, an amazing honour for him and our family. My cousin Herbert Phillip Shrubsall and I never met because he died in service to our country 17 years before I was born. He died before he really had a chance to live, before he could even have a family of his own. He died so that we can be free. He was injured storming the beaches of Dieppe on Aug 19, 1942 and was returned to England to heal his wounds. He diedin August 1944 and is buried in France. He inspires me to be a better Canadian and to love and respect the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. For if not for them we would never be free. Keven Ellis
