New blood is heating up 2010's Oscar nominee list. From singer-songwriters yanked from obscurity to hot young pairings, here is a preview of some red carpet cool.
Songwriter Ryan Bingham, 'Crazy Heart'
Blessed with soulful brown eyes and a wicked gift for crafting killer songs, Bingham, 28, saved "Crazy Heart" according to Jeff Bridges. The film's moody theme, "The Weary Kind," is a Best Original Song contender.

Hot couple: Carey Mulligan and Shia LaBeouf
Could the Oscars ask for a cuter red-carpet couple? A Best Actress nominee for "An Education," Mulligan hooked up with LaBeouf on Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" sequel, "Money Never Sleeps." The on-again-off-again relationship has been making tabloid news ever since. The British ingénue may stand little chance of stealing a golden statue from frontrunner, Sandra Bullock. But, settling for golden boy LaBeouf can't be all bad.

Actor Jeremy Renner, 'The Hurt Locker'
Once a character actor on low-budget indie films, 39-year-old Jeremy Renner blasted onto Oscar's A-list thanks to Kathryn Bigelow's war-time masterpiece, "The Hurt Locker." Set in Iraq, Renner infuses this thriller with a raw sense of palpable anger. His explosive turn as a bomb disposal expert scooped up a Best Actor nomination. Hollywood's new "it" boy has all the ammo to take down favourite Jeff Bridges.

Director Jason Reitman, 'Up in the Air'
Back in 2007, Canada's Jason Reitman turned the off-beat romance "Juno" into an Oscar sensation. Reitman, 32, topped that achievement in 2009 with "Up in the Air." He coaxed an Oscar-worthy performance from Clooney. Nominated for Best Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, Reitman's prospective pot of Oscar gold could turn him into Hollywood's new top-dog.

Costume designer Monique Prudhomme, 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus'
Countless women wish they could dress and undress Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell. Vancouver costume designer Monique Prudhomme landed that dream job on "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus." Prudhomme scored a Best Costume nomination for the eclectic, Gypsy-like fashions. Her white suit for Heath Ledger was a showstopper. After his death, Depp stepped in first to wear the iconic suit.

Hot couple: George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis
It is easy to see why George Clooney likes Elisabetta Canalis. In 2009 the Italian model and host of MTV Italy's "Total Request Live" graced the cover of FHM magazine in black underwear. Since then, Clooney's new squeeze has been on his arm on both sides of the Atlantic. And, according the Us magazine, Clooney has reportedly helped Canalis land a role in the TNT drama, "Leverage." That says "I love you" in Hollywood.

Actress Gabourey Sidibe, 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire'
Once an office temp, 26-year-old Gabourey Sidibe took a gamble and auditioned for Lee Daniels' searing new drama, "Precious." Delivering a blistering performance as an obese teenager who transcends incest and abuse, Sidibe rules this Harlem saga with heart and courage. Now a Best Actress nominee, this articulate underdog could have the last laugh over all the skinny 'witches' in Hollywood -- and pull off one of the biggest upsets in Oscar history.

Director Oren Moverman, 'The Messenger'
Israeli director Oren Moverman, 44, tried to get a "real director" to helm this script that he co-wrote with Alessandro Camon. When Ben Affleck and others declined, Moverman stepped in and turned "The Messenger" into a major Oscar contender. Nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Woody Harrelson, the film comes with no bombs or war-time missiles. But this gripping tale of two soldiers who tell families of their loved ones' deaths in Iraq is no less explosive.

Animated aces: Wes Anderson, 'Fantastic Mr. Fox', and Peter Docter, 'Up'
A larcenous fox and an old grouch with a taste for travel hardly seem the stuff of Hollywood greatness. Thanks to directors Wes Anderson "Fantastic Mr. Fox") and Peter Docter "Up"), these animated gems narrowed the gap between traditional adult movies and "kids" pictures at the box office. Charming, witty and full of artistry, both films are up for Best Animated Feature. Docter's "Up" is also a Best Picture contender.

Red carpet couple: Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner
Oh, the woe of dating "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson! To silence rumours about their off-screen relationship, Kristen Stewart is taking Taylor Lautner to the Oscars. Her strategy is shrewd. Stewart and Lautner are old pals. The "Twilight" cast members are also presenters at this year's Academy Awards. Seeing Stewart without Pattinson will bite for some fans. As for that platonic Oscar photo-op, can it really squash those romantic rumours? Not likely.

Actor Christoph Waltz, 'Inglourious Basterds'
Thanks to Quentin Tarantino's rollicking WWII picture, "Inglourious Basterds, Christoph Waltz, 53, shot from total obscurity in Hollywood to Oscar frontrunner. The Austrian actor's piercing portrayal of the Nazi Jew hunter Hans Landa scooped up countless awards, making him a sure-bet for a Best Supporting Actor win in 2010. As Tarantino has said, "Christoph played it to a tee…If I couldn't have found someone as good as Christoph I might not have made 'Inglourious Basterds."

Screenwriter Nick Hornby, 'An Education'
Best-known for his novels "About a Boy" and "High Fidelity," British writer Hornby hit it out of the ballpark with his screenplay for the Oscar-nominated film, "An Education." Starring Carey Mulligan as an innocent teen awakened to life by a slick older man, Hornby's script is up for Best Adapted Screenplay. And, rightly so. Hornby made this "Breakfast at Tiffany's" styled path to illumination a heady trip.

Director Neill Blomkamp, 'District 9'
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Vancouver advertising director Neill Blomkamp, 30, sparked a global sensation with his sci-fi film debut, "District 9." This creepy, kick-ass alien tale scared moviegoers senseless. It also stunned traditional Oscar fans when it scored an unprecedented spot among this year's Best Picture nominees. An underdog of gargantuan proportions, we'll hear the gasps from here to Pluto should Blomkamp's outer-space treat KO "Avatar" and win Oscar gold.
