Sure, dance movies are cheesy. And predictable. The typical plot involves a poor inner-city youth/new kid in town who rebels through dance. But there is something therapeutic about watching dance movies. We might cringe at the some of the fromage lines, but the truth is we can’t turn them off. Ahead of the release of ‘Fame,’ CTV.ca counts down the top ten dance movies we love to hate.
MGM
The film: Step Up, 2006
The stars: Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan
The plot: A Baltimore rebel from the wrong side of the tracks attracts the attention of a privileged ballet dancer when he is sentenced to community service at the elite Maryland School of Arts.
The scene-stealing dance: The final dance scene where Tatum’s character shows up at the last minute to save her senior showcase by infusing hip-hop flare into her ballet routine.
Touchstone Pictures
The film: Dance With Me, 1998
The stars: Vanessa Williams, Chayanne
The plot: A washed up former dance champion pairs up with an enterprising Cuban man to create an unlikely duo who take the dancing world by storm.
The scene-stealing dance: When Chayanne’s character re-unites with William’s character and leads her to the dance floor for a passionate dance instead of leaving for his native Cuba.

The film: Flashdance, 1983
The stars: Jennifer Beals, Michael Nouri
The plot: A Pittsburgh welder by day and classy stripper by night who dreams to become a ballet dancer must conquer her fear of failure when her love interest scores her an audition.
The scene-stealing dance: When she pours a bucket of water over herself during the opening ‘chair dance’ sequence, which has now been parodied countless times.

The film: Center Stage, 2000
The stars: Amanda Schull, Zoe Saldana
The plot: A dozen young dancers have to overcome tensions as they train at a prestigious ballet school in hopes to be chosen to join the American Ballet Company.
The scene-stealing dance: Bad boy meets ballet in this sexy final number. The final dance scene is a high-energy medley that starts with Michael Jackson's "The way you make me feel."

The film: Girls Just Want to Have Fun, 1985
The stars: Sarah Jessica Parker, Hellen Hunt and Lee Montgomery
The plot: Janey, a new girl in town who has a passion for dancing, enters a competition for the new ‘Dance TV’ couple despite her strict father’s opposition to the idea of her dancing or fraternizing with boys like her partner, Jeff.
The scene-stealing dance: The dance off scene in which Janey and Jeff perform an outstanding tandem gymnastic routine that even has Janey’s father pumping his arm in glee.
New World
The film: Chicago, 2003
The stars: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rene Zellweger, Richard Gere
The plot: Two murderesses who fight it out for fame in the headlines find themselves on death row together and sharing the same greasy lawyer who wants to make them legal legends.
The scene-stealing dance: Richard Gere’s tap dancing scene, which took him three months of lessons and a half day to shoot, was worth all the effort.

The film: Save the Last Dance, 2001
The stars: Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas
The plot: A former ballet prodigy moves to an inner-city school where she meets a poor hip-hop dancer who is caught between street life and his dream of medical school.
The scene-stealing dance: When Stiles tries to embrace funk and cram it into her stuffy ballet-trained dancing style.

The plot: A big city teen moves to a small town where dancing is deemed illegal and rebels against the law while wooing the prettiest girl in town.
