“We wanted to go sexy and opulent with purples and golds, and crazy hair,” choreographer Luther Brown says about the look of the Top 14 group piece.

“It’s a hip-hop-ified Tudor-style. We took out all of the structure of the original period dresses, the heavy fabrics, petticoats and hoop skirts, and added in patent leather,” says wardrobe designer Lee Kinoshita-Bevington.

Lee explains the fabric of the period: "Damask is a tone-on-tone pattern woven into the pattern. Brocade is more three-dimensional, with bubbly, puckering textures, and often has metallic thread woven in to the fabric."

“The tops all have boning in them, to keep the corseted look, but we used a light, flexible material so everything moves," Lee says about the girls' tops.

"We researched the period a lot and really wanted to get a good feel for what they wore, but then we really played with that idea," Lee explains about Danielle's costume.

"The guys’ jackets are Velcro-ed down the front, but we had problems with them staying closed. We had to add in extra Velcro at the last minute," Lee explains as he fits Shavar in his costume.

Denys laces up his boots. "We put the guys in high boots and the girls are in four-inch heels, but they’re big heavy heels, so they match the period look and they’re pretty easy to dance in," Lee says.
