Sandra Bullock, 'The Blind Side'
Having already taken home the win for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and picking up several other awards along the way, it's no surprise that Bullock has scored her first Oscar nod as well. Some critics are calling her portrayal of a well-to-do woman who adopts a homeless teenager and future football star the best performance of her career. But will it be enough to tackle her opponents?

Helen Mirren, 'The Last Station'
As Countess Sofya, the wife of Russian literary icon Leo Tolstoy, Helen Mirren seduces the audience with her tempestuous outbursts and manipulative ways as much as she does her aging husband. The role has already earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Mirren is also no stranger to the adoration of the Academy - she won an Oscar three years ago for playing another famous figure, Queen Elizabeth II.

Carey Mulligan, 'An Education'
Who wouldn't want to give up everything for a hunky older man, weekend excursions to Paris and Chanel No. 5? British actress Carey Mulligan shows us just how tempting this type of 'education' can be when 16-year-old Jenny falls for a much older man played by Peter Sarsgaard. With the perfect mix of wide-eyed innocence and maturity beyond her years, it's no wonder Mulligan's performance has made her the 'it girl' of the festival season.

Gabourey Sidibe, 'Precious'
In her acting debut, Sidibe brings 'Precious' to life - a young girl from Harlem who has been sexually abused by her father and verbally abused by her mother. Even though the subject matter is hard to watch at times, Sidibe's performance is so compelling you can't take your eyes off the screen. With a Golden Globe nomination and plenty of critical praise, the real-life fairytale for Sidibe, who also hails from Harlem, is just beginning.

Meryl Streep, 'Julia & Julia'
Meryl Streep has become the Susan Lucci of the Oscars. This is her 16th Oscar nomination but she hasn't won a golden statue since 1983 for 'Sophie's Choice.' Her only other win came three years earlier for 'Kramer vs. Kramer.' Could her portrayal of cooking icon Julia Child be enough to whip up a delectable Oscar win?
