Jeff Bridges,'Crazy Heart'
Bridges' win at the Golden Globes for Best Actor, beating out heavyweights like George Clooney and Morgan Freeman, has drawn comparisons to Mickey Rourke's surprise upset for 'The Wrestler' at the Oscars last year. Could Bridges' raw portrayal of a down on his luck country star be enough for the Academy to once again favour the underdog?

George Clooney, 'Up in the Air'
Playing a bachelor who doesn't want to be weighed down with relationships has some critics calling this the performance of Clooney's career. With comparisons to the actor's real-life persona, Clooney shows us a vulnerability not often seen, without sacrificing any of his trademark wit and charm. Already soaring high with critical acclaim, can Clooney take flight at the Oscars as well?

Colin Firth, 'A Single Man'
Bridget Jones who? In 'A Single Man' Colin Firth is as far from the blubbering Mark Darcy as he could possibly be, playing a gay English professor mourning the death of his lover and set to commit suicide at the end of the day. The Tom Ford-directed debut gives Firth the meatiest material of his career and he sinks his teeth in with more fervor than we've ever seen from the British actor.

Morgan Freeman, 'Invictus'
Anything Morgan Freeman touches turns to gold and that includes his performance of Nelson Mandela in 'Invictus.' The veteran actor fully embodies the famous former South African president who united his divided country through rugby, with sincerity, not to mention a spot-on accent. The comparisons drawn between Mandela taking office and Barack Obama's rise to victory also can't hurt Freeman's campaign for an Oscar win.

Jeremy Renner, 'The Hurt Locker'
With Jeremy Renner's breakout success, it's not just roadside bombs exploding in 'The Hurt Locker.' The California-born actor, who has been steadily paying his Hollywood dues for the past 10 years, delivers an emotionally-charged performance that has already earned him a Screen Actor's Guild nomination. An Oscar win could ensure he has his pick of roles from here on in.
