'Vampire Diaries’ stars: fan opinion has an effect on plotline
In between battling hybrids, psychotic Originals and a crazed serial killer, the sexy supernatural actors of “The Vampire Diaries” had some time to reveal the secrets behind creating the hit show.
Actors Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, (Canadian) Nina Dobrev and executive producer Julie Plec tell Entertainment Weekly “The Vampire Diaries” takes into consideration the opinions of its fans when plotting the main love triangle.
“How can we service this moment between our characters that we really want, a Damon and Elena kiss, without getting the Stefan-Elena side of the fandom to give up hope and give up on us?” Plec tells EW in an upcoming issue. “And vice versa, when we want Stefan and Elena to have a moment together, how can we do that and not have our Delena fans outraged?”
Plec goes on to explain the concept of “shippers”: derived from the word ‘relationship’, they’re fans who believe a romance exists, or will and should exist, between their favourite characters on a given show. According to the story, the creators of “The Vampire Diaries” want to honour these fans, and make sure when they do add a twist to the Stefan-Elena-Damon triangle, it seems natural and organic so they don’t upset too many “shippers”.
If you’re a “TVD” fan, you know this situation well. Chances are you’ve picked a side and like to root for the affectionately named pairings of ‘Stelena’ or ‘Delena’ already. But at least now you know choosing a side actually counts for something when the writers start plotting those “oh-em- gee” moments.
In tonight’s new episode, the stakes will be no different. Fans everywhere will be rooting for either Damon or Stefan as both agree to take Elena to a formal ball. But it’s not just any formal ball – it’s being thrown by the crazed hybrid vampire Klaus, and both Damon and Stefan have to prove they alone can protect her.
Team Stelena and Team Delena fans, get ready to duke it out tonight on an all-new “The Vampire Diaries” at 7PM ET on CTV Two.
