We’ve seen doppelgangers, werewolves, hybrids, and ghosts this year on “The Vampire Diaries.” We also met the Original vampire family, were introduced to Caroline’s vampire-hating father Bill and got reunited with a few familiar ghosts. More importantly, we got our first taste of what an Elena and Damon pairing would look like (it was hot!).

So what can “The Vampire Diaries” do next season to top all of that? It will definitely be a tough season to beat, but we put our heads together and came up with some (purely fun) predictions on what we think could happen when the show returns in the fall.

Elena and Damon FINALLY get together
It’s been three seasons in the making; fans everywhere have been clamouring for a relationship between Elena and Damon. We know Elena is supposed going to make her choice between the brothers in the finale, but we can't help but hope that whatever choice she makes, there's definitley a "Delena" romance scheduled for the future. We’ve seen them kiss, we’ve seen Damon declare his love for Elena, and we’ve seen her unable to deny she’s attracted to him as well. So where could that leave the pair for season four? Hopefully headed for an actual, real relationship!

Elena becomes a vampire
SPOILER ALERT: Elena becomes a vampire in the books on which the show was based (it was a major plot point). The show has diverged from the plotline of the novels before, so will it go this route? We don’t know, but after three seasons of human Elena, we wouldn’t mind seeing the TV version catch up with the novels and let vampire Elena loose in Mystic Falls.

Klaus kidnaps Elena and Matt
Klaus made it very clear that his plan is to create an army of hybrids.  Yes, we know the gang took him out of comission recently but, until he's been staked by the white oak tree, he's bound to be back. And when Klaus returns, he'll want to carry out his plan and keep Elena to himself (since he needs her blood) and also kidnap her former boyfriend Matt so they can reproduce and continue her bloodline.  It would be interesting in season four to see the lengths the Salvatore brothers will go to save the woman they both love.

Stefan and Elena get engaged
SPOILER ALERT: This is another storyline that happens in the novel, but has yet to make its way into the show. This may not happen right away in season four since Elena only just graduated high school.  However, if the show resolves the Original vampire storyline and sets off in a new direction (maybe with a time jump), we could totally see Stefan and Elena back on track and planning for their future as a couple.

We meet more of the Fell family
We were introduced to Meredith Fell this season, and we learned that she’s quite aware of all the supernatural occurrences in Mystic Falls. It was later revealed that she also descended from one of the founding families, the Fells. SPOILER ALERT: Fans of the books will remember the Fell family played a big part in the downfall of Klaus; so maybe we’ll meet more members of the Fell family, and really understand their connection to the town.
