Following (what else) a drunken hookup last season, it seems unlikely that Raj and Penny will continue a relationship in upcoming episodes of “The Big Bang Theory”, according to one of the stars of the show.

Actor Kunal Nayyar told “the Hollywood Reporter” that when he first read about his character sleeping with Kaley Cuoco’s Penny, “it was a surprise to me. There was nothing during the season that indicated that’s where the story was heading.”

Nayyar said that Raj’s inability to talk to women when not inebriated, combined with Penny’s loyalty to the nerdy group of friends, made it unlikely for the odd match to remain together - especially when their “walk of shame” was seen by everyone.

“It’s obvious they both felt -- at least he at some level -- felt like that was a mistake. So it’ll be interesting to see what happens. I hope that Leonard and Raj stay friends,” Nayyar told THR.

The 30-year-old will be appearing with his “Big Bang Theory” co-stars at the upcoming San Diego Comic Convention, where they will sit as a panel before a crowd of adoring fans.

Nayyar visited Toronto earlier this year to greet fans and media for the CTV Upfront 2011 celebration, and also appeared for an “etalk” special last fall in the parking lot at 299 Queen Street West.

For fans that want an inside look at Nayyar’s personal life, I recommend they check out his Twitter feed @kunalnayyar, where he frequently posts about his day-to-day activities as well as a wide variety of thoughts and opinions.

Cuoco is also a prolific tweeter herself, and you can follow her at @kaleycuoco.

Perhaps Cuoco will return as a main focal point on the upcoming season of “The Big Bang Theory,” after being sidelined when she broke her leg in a horse riding accident last year. Not only did the injury force her to spend time on the series “tending bar” at the Cheesecake Factory and mostly standing behind the island in her kitchen, but it also gave a boost in screen time to recurring characters Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik).

“The Big Bang Theory” returns this fall on CTV.
